Processes and Treatments

All of these pots are designed to be used and are oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe. We encourage you to use them, to appreciate their beauty and form, as they become part of your daily life.

Thrown Ware
Tlethese pieces are individually thrown on the pottery wheel. All measurements are approximate.

Slab Moulded Dishes
Slab moulded dishes start off as a slab of clay draped over a simple hump mould. The pot, when leather hard, is given a coating of black or white slip, then decorated and carved in the same way as thrown pieces.

With this method of making, which is very old fashioned and simple, the pots tend to “move” while drying and during firing. This slight movement can vary the form, which gives them life and character.

Carved Ware
When the pots are leather hard, they are given a coating of black or white slip. The next day the patterns are drawn totally freehand and carved through the layer of slip back to the clay. After the bisque, they are hand-dipped in a transparent colored glaze. Our black carved pots are hand-dipped in a traditional Chinese Chün glaze and given a special smoking during firing. These steps bring out and vary the color and depth of the glaze from firing to firing; ensuring each pot's liveliness and individual character. No two are alike. This is what we find to be the intriguing quality and beauty in making these pots.

Painted Ware (Blue and White, Green and White Brushwork)
Each pot, after it is made, complete in form and attachments, is dipped in white slip and allowed to dry out completely. They are then fired to a bisque temperature. Once cooled, they are hand-dipped in a white opaque glaze. The glaze dries immediately to a smooth powdery surface, and is then ready for painting.

Painting is done totally freehand, using traditional Chinese cobalt, chrome, and iron pigments.
These pots are all fired at 2360 degrees (F) which insures that they will have a long life, and will be extremely durable for everyday use.
