Awards presented for FSCcertified furniture
By Brian Caldwell
The Collins Companies of Portland, Ore., recently presented awards to honor fine craftsmanship and the support of forest stewardship. Winners of the International CollinsWood Millennium awards were selected in three categories: Kitchen & Bath, Entertainment, and SoHo (small office/home office). All entries were built with 100-percent Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood sold by Collins.
Charles Shackleton of Charles ShackletonThomas Furniture and Pottery in Bridgewater, Vt., was the winner in the Kitchen & Bath category for "Kitchen Dresser," an heirloom piece using rough-sawn cherry and poplar. The design includes sliding dovetail case joinery, dado and tenon face-frame construction, hand-carved dentil molding, half-blind dovetail drawer joinery, solid cherry adjustable shelves, and door fronts with floating raised panels.
The awards focus attention on the need and demand by consumers and environmentalists to protect forest ecosystems while still harvesting trees in a sustainable manner. Winning pieces are available for purchase either from The Collins Companies or directly through the designer/builder.
The Collins Companies is a family owned business founded in 1855 and the first privately owned forest products business to be certified by the FSC.
