This ceramic art piece, representing World Peace, was designed exclusively for the United Nations of New York in 2006 by International artist and potter, Miranda Thomas. A limited edition of 40 bowls were made, of which most were sold at the UNA-NY "Millennium Development Goals" 2006 Gala Dinner. The proceeds from the sales were donated directly to the UNA-NY, to help fund forums, and educational and cultural programs that highlight the importance of the United Nations to the United States and our international neighbors. An 'open run' of these bowls are available for purchase from the retail stores of ShackletonThomas.
In the following paragraph, Miranda Thomas describes the creation process of a bowl and the unique symbolism behind the Peace Dove:
"Each of these special bowls was hand thrown from porcelain, the purest of clays. I have drawn the doves freehand, carrying the olive branch of peace. With a very sharp bamboo tool, the negative spaces are deeply carved out to reveal the clay's beauty. Each piece is then fired in a reducing kiln to 2370° F. Three days later, they are drawn from the kiln incandescent and ready to make an offering.
The dove on this bowl is determined and committed, passionately believing in its mission of hope. Its flight is courageous; it struggles on, holding its course through the swirling scroll of life. It represents each of us, facing the many challenges ahead. The dove is emblematic of all our hard work towards peace."
