The Cocktail Cabinet
We are thrilled to share one of the more remarkable pieces to emerge from our workshop this season: a custom cocktail cabinet that embodies timeless design and deep connection to the materials. What truly sets this cabinet apart is the spalted maple utilized for its door fronts, sourced directly from the client's own property. This adds a layer of personal connection and meaning to the finished work. For those unfamiliar Spalted maple is nature's own artwork, formed when fungi colonize the wood. Competing fungal species create striking zone lines—thin, dark, carbon-rich barriers used to protect their territory. The resulting light and dark patterns are beautiful, but the material is notoriously challenging to work with, requiring careful handling to ensure the wood remains structurally sound. You can see this unique patterning woven across the door fronts of this piece.
To bring this vision to life, our master craftsman Troy Woods utilized every bit of his experience. Working with this challenging maple, he executed perfect, handmade dovetails and solved countless problems on the fly. The finished cabinet is truly stunning in every aspect, from the material preparation to the meticulous execution of the joinery and finish. This cabinet is more than just furniture; it is an heirloom, preserving a piece of the client's land. We know this custom ShackletonThomas piece will be cherished and passed down for multiple generations.
