Chicago Garden Bench
Made By Hand in Vermont
The Chicago Garden Bench is the foundational masterpiece that launched our workshop, originally designed by Charles Shackleton in 1987 at the request of the Chicago Botanic Garden. As our very first order, this bench led to the creation of the Charles Shackleton Furniture line and has since graced the CBG and hundreds of private gardens for over three decades.
This design masterfully balances a quest for true outdoor comfort with architectural inspiration drawn from Chicago's rich industrial heritage.
Features & Craftsmanship
-
Industrial-Inspired Details: The bench features a rhythmic arrangement of vertical slats and substantial framing, paying homage to the gears and structural legacy of Chicago.
-
Signature Hand-Carved Curls: Each armrest terminates in a large, sinuous hand-carved curl, providing a tactile and artistic focal point that has become a hallmark of our workshop.
-
Arched Backrest: The high back is crowned with a gentle, hand-shaped arch that adds a touch of organic grace to the bench's robust silhouette.
-
Contoured Seating: The slatted seat is subtly curved to provide exceptional ergonomic support, inviting you to linger and enjoy the landscape in comfort.
-
Premium Teak Construction: Handcrafted from solid, sustainably sourced teak, this bench is naturally resistant to the elements and engineered for lifelong outdoor durability.
-
Heirloom Joinery: Built using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, the Chicago Garden Bench is a durable work of art intended to weather beautifully and last for generations.
The Chicago Garden Bench is more than outdoor seating; it is a piece of living history that brings soulful Vermont craftsmanship and timeless design to any garden setting.
