Lidded Storage Jar with Krill Hand Painted signed by Miranda Thomas

Soon after visiting South Georgia and Antarctica, the potters presented me this colossal moon shaped jar to decorate. The image of masses of krill swimming across its surface immediately came to my mind.
I decided to cloak the jar in a pure white glaze to represent Antarctica. As I painted the krill, I wanted to portray their individual characters; to capture their movements as they busily go about their task of scraping and feeding off the algae growing under the sea ice. Their big eyes, their social behavior, and the constant movement of their legs were a challenge to paint freehand. Since this piece, I have fallen in love with painting them.
Krill are the foundation of the food chain of Penguins, Blue Whale, Baleen Whales, Seals, and Sea Lions. Overfishing of the Krill in the Southern Ocean has become a deep concern of mine —
they demand our respect and protection.
